Ancestors

J. W. Lovegrove was descended from the Lovegroves of Wantage, Berkshire. His grandfather was also a tailor, while his father was both tailor and publican.

The picture to the right shows J.W. Lovegrove with his father William James Lovegrove. The two young girls are probably two of his three daughters; Dorothy Blanche, Edith Marjorie, and Kathleen Mary.



Father - William James Lovegrove

Late of "Clovelly", Newbury Street, Wantage, Berkshire. Tailor and publican. Born in March and baptised on June 21st 1846 in Wantage. Born in Grove and had his first tailoring business there before moving to Wantage in 1869. Sometime Licensee of the White Heart Inn, Wantage. Died 15th February 1913 and burried in Wantage Cemetery.

Mother - Emma Clifton

Eldest daughter of William and Sarah Clifton of Grove, Berkshire. Born 2 July 1849. Married at Grove, Berkshire, 14th April 1867. Late of the home of her son James William at 76, Bolinbroke Grove, Wandsworth Common. Died 21st December 1927 and buried in Wantage.

Grandfather - David Lovegrove

Born 27th August and baptised 15th September 1822 at Wantage. Master Tailor late of Mill Street, Wantage. Sometime of Stratfield Mortimer and Faringdon, Berkshire, and Shillingford, Oxon. Returned to Wantage after the 1841 Census. Died at Elsm Grove House, Wantage, 21st March 1843 aged 70 years.

Grandmother - Mary Culley

Daughter of William Culley of Stanford-in-the-Vale, Berkshire. Sometime of Great Faringdon, Berkshire. Died 18th February 1905.
